In the construction field, there are hundreds, if not thousands of companies and individuals ready to offer their services. Choosing the right contractor for your project is critical to the final results that you will receive. When it comes to decks additions and other remodeling projects, there are basically three types of builders you may encounter with each having its own unique advantages and disadvantages.

General Contractors

This group, as the name implies, performs a wide range of projects and relies heavily on subcontractors to complete a job. They are typically suited for large-scale projects with many different phases. It is important to remember that subcontractors are independent entities that have committed to a fixed price; therefore, they are motivated to accomplish their work in the fastest and least expensive way possible. The general contractor’s income is received for managing this work. An established company should operate with some experience and understanding of the real cost and procedures of doing business.

Independent Contractors

Due to the relatively low-cost of business entry, there are endless streams of independent contractors. They are motivated by the independence of being their own boss. While many have good experience and skills, there is often little business planning, management, design and financial resources to create a solid ongoing operation. The size and complexity of projects they undertake is limited in several ways. It is difficult for a single individual to accomplish large tasks, and few individuals truly have a high level of skill in the many different areas that quality jobs require.

Specialty Contractor

If your project is focused mainly in one area, like outdoor living additions, a specialty contractor is your best choice. Specialty contractors, like DeckTec, are often able to provide a higher quality of work at a lower cost. They specialize in a specific type of project and employ skilled craftsmen. In addition, they have more experience in the design and management of their projects.

Important Considerations

Regardless of the type of contractor you choose, it is important that you take into consideration a few key factors. Be sure to research how long the contractor has been in business and that they are licensed and insured. Do they specialize in the type of project you are looking to do and can they provide an extensive list of references in your area? To help you compare contractors, we have created a Contractor Comparison Checklist for you to use.
