Client Interviews: The Skibinski Family

October 3rd, 2018|Blog, Colorado Life, Customer Feature, Deck Project Highlights, Life On Deck|

Friends and family say that Mike and Korrie’s DeckTec deck has turned the already-beautiful Skibinski home into a luxury resort. But it’s not just about impressing others. The split-level Mahogany deck, which was completed in July, works for the Skibinski family on so many levels (no pun intended). Architecturally, the deck connects the house to the pool, creating a sense of flow that the Westminster property lacked. Korrie, who works in education, now has a place to relax after work and as she put it, “just listen to the rain.” For the Skibinskis’ 13-year-old daughter, the deck is a peaceful, quiet spot outdoors where she can concentrate better on her homework. And the deck brings people together. The family eats dinner together out there regularly and hosts large parties without it feeling crowded. In fact, the deck offers something for everyone – including the youngest Skibinski. “It’s not like the [...]

Everyone Loves a Fire Pit

October 25th, 2017|Decks & Backyard Features, Life On Deck, Outdoor Living|

When it comes to “fire on deck” and staying warm, there’s something for every need – from a fire pit to fireplaces and heaters. DeckTec can make it happen. “There’s been a big evolution in all of this since the first outdoor fire options came on board in the late 90s and early 2000s,” Steve Sparhawk, owner of DeckTec said. (Download: The Ultimate Guide to Starting Your Custom Outdoor Deck Project) “Fire pits warm the lower body, whereas fire tables, when you sit around them, warm the upper body,” Dave Hall, owner of Colorado Comfort Products, said. “A lot of people prefer a fire pit because of that lower body warmth.” Fire pits are great because they can also double as a coffee table. Hall said that he sells five times more fire pits than tables. “The advantage of fire tables is that they provide warmth around an eating surface,” [...]

Deck Worthy Beer Pairings

April 24th, 2017|Blog, Outdoor Recipes|

Sunset Classic Barbecued Ribs with a Quadrupel Beer Pairing: Quadrupel No fat, no flavor. Properly seasoned and grilled pork ribs satisfy some of our most primal urges, and nothing less than a bold beer pairing is called for. Wine lovers would likely reach for a brawny Zin or Barbera. The beer pairing you need for ribs is a quadrupel, the Belgian abbey brew that marries huge layers of rich, stonefruit flavor with peppery yeast strains without the astringent tannins of big red wines. Look for Apis IV from Elevation Beer Co in Poncha Springs, CO; Elevationbeerco.com. Grilled Seafood and Chorizo Paella with Saison Beer Pairing: Saison Whatever else paella brings to the party, from shellfish to piquant sausage, saffron rules them all, and it’s both too delicately delicious and dear to overpower. Enter saison, traditionally brewed in Flemish farmhouses for seasonal workers. The most traditional versions are a touch sour, [...]

Deck or Patio? What’s best for you?

April 10th, 2017|Blog, Deck Design Tips & Trends|

One of the most often asked questions over the years has been: “What’s better, a deck or a patio?” The truth is, a lot of that is determined by the site and the elevation that the house is set at. After that’s first considered, for the homes that are relatively close to the ground, where both are viable options, my answer is simple. Better than a deck or a patio, is a deck AND a patio. You can have too much of anything. Just as you can have too much grass, rock, or concrete, you can also have too much wood, or too much stone. Ultimately for the greatest appeal, you’ll want balance. The wood and the stone are the perfect compliments to each other. Artfully Combining Decks & Patios is Best Patios are going to be at or near the ground, and decks are going to be in elevated [...]
