Shovelin’ A Winter Wonderland

February 7th, 2016|Life On Deck|

How to Shovel Like a Pro In the U.S., some 100 people die shoveling snow every year. But that’s not a recent development. According to studies conducted at the U.S. Nationwide Children’s Hospital, there were over 1,600 cardiac-related snow shoveling fatalities from 1990 to 2006. When people shovel snow, the increase in heart rate and blood pressure, in conjunction with cold air that constricts arteries and blood supply, makes for ideal heart attack conditions. To keep you and your family safe this winter, consider some of these snow shoveling guidelines. For areas affected most heavily, a snow blower might be the best way to go, though they do come with their own risks. This winter, take the proper measures to ensure maximum safety. But remember: A pristine driveway is not worth your life! Do: Push the snow rather than lift it. Lifting wet, heavy snow over the shoulders can surge [...]

DeckTec’s Second “Season”

August 30th, 2014|Deck Design Tips & Trends, DeckTec News & Updates, Outdoor Living|

It's hard to imagine that the wonderful summer weather we've been experiencing will soon come to an end. This year, particularly, homeowners have been grateful for drought relief with plenty of rain and cooler temperatures than the last few summers have shown. So, as surely as the seasons change in Colorado, it's time to enjoy that one last fling of Labor day, then return kids to school and make summer vacations a fond memory away. With this in mind, it may be tempting to think that all the outdoor fun is over. But at DeckTec, we celebrate this time of year, because it marks the beginning of our "second season"—a deck building and maintenance time that runs from September through the end of the year. We're committed to being a part of your community all year round, and have the construction and maintenance teams ready for your new dreams and [...]

Spring Cleaning and Maintenance Time

March 1st, 2014|Blog, Deck Care & Repair, Decks & Backyard Features|

Welcome to springtime in the Rockies.  It won't be long before we'll be enjoying longer days and outdoor temperatures that entice us out back door to enjoy our yards and decks to the fullest. Crocuses will jump out of the soil with cheerful sparkles of purple and white and soon after, our neighborhoods will be a riot of color. But springtime is also the time for maintenance of our homes and yards.  And one of the best first maintenance projects of the season is to take a walk. A walk? Really?  Walking is a chore on the to-do list? Absolutely. Walking and looking around your home and yard is one of the best first tasks of spring.  As Vince Stover of DeckTec put it, "Would you really neglect a room of your home for four months, then suddenly hold a party in it without checking the area for safety and [...]

It’s a Fall Wrap Up

November 9th, 2013|Blog, Deck Care & Repair, DeckTec News & Updates|

With the first frosts behind us, and the holiday season fast approaching, November offers one last set of golden days in which to clean up the back yard and make ready for the winter months ahead. Recently, we spoke to experts in the Outdoor Living experience to help target some great clean up and winter preparation projects you may want to tackle while the weather is still reasonably warm. Adam Guilford, client services representative from DeckTec had these pieces of advice for taking good care of your deck: After putting your furniture away, this is a good time to sweep and wash your deck.  Use warm water and soap to remove discolorations from pots and furniture scrapes.  Do not, however, power-wash your deck, as it will strip both your finish and leave splinters in your wood. Roll up any carpet or rugs, and put them away for the winter. [...]
