Deck Worthy Beer Pairings

April 24th, 2017|Blog, Outdoor Recipes|

Sunset Classic Barbecued Ribs with a Quadrupel Beer Pairing: Quadrupel No fat, no flavor. Properly seasoned and grilled pork ribs satisfy some of our most primal urges, and nothing less than a bold beer pairing is called for. Wine lovers would likely reach for a brawny Zin or Barbera. The beer pairing you need for ribs is a quadrupel, the Belgian abbey brew that marries huge layers of rich, stonefruit flavor with peppery yeast strains without the astringent tannins of big red wines. Look for Apis IV from Elevation Beer Co in Poncha Springs, CO; Elevationbeerco.com. Grilled Seafood and Chorizo Paella with Saison Beer Pairing: Saison Whatever else paella brings to the party, from shellfish to piquant sausage, saffron rules them all, and it’s both too delicately delicious and dear to overpower. Enter saison, traditionally brewed in Flemish farmhouses for seasonal workers. The most traditional versions are a touch sour, [...]

Holiday Decorating with Wildlife In Mind

November 17th, 2014|Life On Deck, Outdoor Living|

Ready or not, the holiday season is just about upon us once again. Time to enjoy your Thanksgiving turkey and start sending your holiday greeting cards. As you dig your Christmas lights and decorations out of the garage or basement we'd like to remind you, especially if you live in one of our wilderness cities, to take care to decorate with wildlife needs in mind. Colorado Parks and Wildlife public information officer, Jennifer Churchill, said that every year the situation happens where a member of our wildlife community gets caught in tennis or soccer nets, or sometimes a trampoline, and often our larger deer and elk get tangled in holiday lights. When we watch these "adventures" on YouTube, they can seem quite funny, but in reality, such episodes often result in broken limbs and even death. "Last year, there was an elk calf caught in a trampoline in Evergreen," said [...]

It’s A Wonderful Life On Deck

July 5th, 2014|Blog, Life On Deck, Outdoor Living|

Each year, the team at DeckTec is proud to help plan and build many beautiful decks in the Denver area. We know that we're constructing more than just a platform out someone's back door. We're creating the opportunity to build family memories, and make great Outdoor Living moments a reality. Some of our clients get so caught up in the construction process, though, that when the job is done, they're not quite sure how to make the most of their new deck. So here are some wonderful ways you can more fully enjoy your new deck experience: Enjoy the Sounds of Being Outside In our rushed world of text messages and kid chauffeuring we can sometimes forget how nice it is to sit in our own back yard and enjoy the sounds of nature. The bees this time of year present a delightful hum, and children playing create a special [...]

Rolling Out The Red Carpet for Hummingbirds

May 17th, 2014|Animals Out the Back Door, Blog, Garden & Lawn Care|

Wild Birds Unlimited, in Lakewood on Wadsworth Boulevard, is a wonderful shop of all things birding. There are books and videos, birdhouses and feeders. The shop has a resident cat, Oliver, and as you wander the aisles, the happy chirping of recorded bird sounds help sooth your stresses away. It's no wonder, then, that when we write a blog post about birds of all kinds, our first stop is to Wild Birds and owner, Scott Menough. Recently, we talked with Scott about the hummingbird season, which is full on at this point. Hummingbird Season "April 15th," said Scott on a chuckle. "Years ago I wrote an article for the Denver Post and I said April 15 is hummingbird day. Of course the first hummingbirds we usually hear about arrive closer to April 8, but nobody remembers that date. Everyone remembers April 15. It's much more fun to get your hummingbird [...]
