Look for the bare necessities, the simple bare necessities
Forget about your worries and your strife
I mean the bare necessities, old mother nature’s recipes
That bring the bare necessities of life

Call me crazy, but I feel like ol’ Baloo the Bear would be right at home on a DeckTec deck.

Don’t you?

DeckTec is more than just about deck living. We’re passionate about providing you with a space where you can forget about your worries and troubles, thanks to our custom roof covers that offer unparalleled protection and comfort.

In our own jungle, we all have essential, or bare, needs that help us survive. Disney’s adaptation of The Jungle Book highlighted ‘man’s red fire,’ but there is a far more valuable need that we should be wise not to take for granted—a roof over our heads. Shelter from the elements isn’t just a necessity of survival, but once we have attained security with a home and a backyard oasis, a roof is no less essential.

Many homeowners think of a deck as just an elevated platform, a place to throw a BBQ or sit around a fire. But it’s much more than just a collection of horizontally placed boards. A deck is the anchor of your backyard, the same way your home is the base of your life – and what do you need to have a home?

You guessed it! A roof.

DeckTec's heirarchy of outdoor living

DeckTec’s Hierarchy of Outdoor Living

If you’ve ever taken a psychology or social sciences class in high school or college, you may have seen Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs in a textbook. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a psychological theory proposed by Abraham Maslow in 1943, which suggests that human needs can be arranged in a hierarchical order. At the base are the most fundamental physiological needs, and as these needs are met, higher-level needs emerge. The hierarchy consists of five levels, with the most basic and essential needs located at the base of the hierarchy. Maslow proposed that individuals move through these levels sequentially, starting from the bottom and progressing upward.

What are the most basic of human needs? Glad you asked.

Physiological needs include, among other essentials for survival, shelter. Or a roof.

This got me thinking. Should there be a hierarchy of needs for outdoor living? And if so, where does a roof fall in the hierarchy? An expertly crafted deck is a terrific place to let the bare necessities of life come to you until our weather takes a turn. A deck with a roof offers not just protection, but also comfort from the searing sun or stinging wind. It can keep you cozy from the cold practically year-round, allowing you to fully relax and enjoy your outdoor space.

In the hierarchy of outdoor living, roof covers become essential. But a roof is more than a basic need. In Maslow’s Hierarchy, once humans secure baseline needs, they continue to seek out Safety, Love, Recognition, and, finally, Self-actualizing needs—all needs that a roof helps support in the hierarchy of outdoor living.

Think about it.

Once you have a roof over your head, you can protect yourself from a sunburn and the prying eyes of your neighbors (Safety- check). This allows you to foster closer relationships (Love – check). The closer relationships will lead to admiration (and Recognition – check) for your forethought to get a deck with a roof cover and allow you the support and confidence to look for other ways to improve yourself (Self-actualizing – check) – both in your day-to-day life and outdoor life.

All thanks to a deck with a roof cover.

Is the idea of an outdoor living hierarchy crazy? Crazy like a fo… bear.

Backyard living is no different from living-living. We all have basic needs, such as a roof, but it can get overlooked in the backyard. Don’t overlook the bare necessities of outdoor living.

My husband Matt and I [...] have moved away from the home where we had the beautiful deck and outdoor living space you created.  We will forever remember fondly that beautiful deck, and the hard work you did during a very bad economic time to fix problems around the foundation of our home.  Steve, Keith, and all of your workers were fabulous and we sent several of our friends your way with referrals.  We are sure that your deck helped us get a wonderful offer on our home.

Nancy & Matt, Lakewood

We just wanted to tell you how much we enjoy the decks DeckTec constructed at our home. Their use is a constant joy. We continually receive compliments on the design and quality of your work. We look forward to many years of use.

DeckTec are absolute pros. They just finished a big deck and roof cover project at my house. The total experience from working with Steve in Design and Sales, Keith in Project Management, and Charlie, Josh, and Hank in Construction was nothing but 6 star service. 100% on time and on budget with craftsmanship and quality. Skip the “Hammer and Nails” contractors and go with DeckTec if you want an “Outdoor Living Space”. Call these people – you will not be disappointed.

Dave & Sheila, Centennial

I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with the work Decktec completed refinishing my deck. It hasn’t looked this good since it was new sixteen years ago. Decktec was very professional, polite and willing to work with me to get the exact color of stain I wanted. I would recommend Decktec to anyone who wants a complete job from the great construction work starting the job, to its thorough cleanup. I’m happy my neighbor referred me to Decktec. You are the fourth company I’ve had refinish my deck and will now be the only company I use going forward.
