Friends and family say that Mike and Korrie’s DeckTec deck has turned the already-beautiful Skibinski home into a luxury resort. But it’s not just about impressing others. The split-level Mahogany deck, which was completed in July, works for the Skibinski family on so many levels (no pun intended).

Architecturally, the deck connects the house to the pool, creating a sense of flow that the Westminster property lacked.

Korrie, who works in education, now has a place to relax after work and as she put it, “just listen to the rain.” For the Skibinskis’ 13-year-old daughter, the deck is a peaceful, quiet spot outdoors where she can concentrate better on her homework. And the deck brings people together. The family eats dinner together out there regularly and hosts large parties without it feeling crowded.
In fact, the deck offers something for everyone – including the youngest Skibinski.

“It’s not like the old deck. If the dog is on the deck, I can lay down and cuddle with her and it’s not all splintery and stuff. I can be out on the deck in bare feet,” their 10-year-old daughter said.
All this functionality would ordinarily be enough. But for the Skibinskis, the DeckTec experience turned out to involve a level of care, craftsmanship and integrity that left them feeling uplifted in ways they never could’ve anticipated.

“We designed it in partnership with DeckTec and the nice thing was the collaboration,” Mike, who works in natural foods marketing, said.

“I feel like they built it for us. I don’t feel like you go in and pick out the deck and then they just build it. It feels very customized to what our family needed,” Korrie said.

It all started at the Colorado Garden and Home Show, where the couple first saw examples of DeckTec decks. They liked that DeckTec only worked with wood.

“We were looking for someone who does high-quality wood decks and was going to take the time to do it right,” Mike said. “With a lot of firms today it’s about speed and efficiency. I sensed with DeckTec that it was about craftsmanship. We’ve had other homes where we built decks that were completed very quickly.”

But craftsmanship was only the beginning. It was the human touch that really made the difference.

“Literally every day for a month the crew was here at 7 a.m. ready to go,” Mike said. “They took their time, they worked hard, they measured and re-measured.”

“They encouraged us to talk to them – Do we have any questions or is there anything that we’re concerned about? They would take care of it, whatever it was. Every day they made sure we were happy about how it was coming together and adjusted as they went along,” he said.

Korrie was happy to report that she felt very comfortable with the crew being at her home.

“I grew up in a construction family,” Korrie said. “These guys were very clean, very polite, they left no trash. They were very considerate of us in the summer with two girls. You could tell they really enjoyed what they were doing, that they were good guys. That helped me feel more secure with them being at our home.”

“It makes me feel like DeckTec cares about their people,” she said.

The project was definitely a big decision and a big investment.

“Seeing DeckTec workers take time to think about every detail was reassuring. I feel like we got our money’s worth,” Mike said. “You don’t find many contractors that are like that anymore.”
And there’s more.

“We’re going to add an outdoor TV, do some landscaping around the deck, and hope to add another level,” Mike said.

Sounds like a plan!
