Most Insightful Advice Nov 2011

In October, President Steve Sparhawk was selected as one of the panel experts for eLocal.com‘s Blog-Off Series. eLocal.com is a national directory of home improvement specialists. As one of the experts, Steve is asked to weigh in on a variety of topics related to the home improvement industry.

This week’s topic posed the question, “What is the best tool in your toolbox?” While there were a variety of specific responses – a tape measure, a smart phone, cinnamon scented pencils – Steve’s advice stressing the importance of design was listed as most insightful:

“When making home improvements, the best tool a consumer can invest in is a professional design. Design lays the foundation for any home improvement project. Having a well-thought-out plan is the difference between a space that is never used and one that is beautiful, functional and adds value to the home. Whether you choose to build the project yourself or hire a contractor, developing the plans for any project is a necessary step in the process.

It is easy to get overwhelmed when receiving several different plans and bids. Oftentimes, a homeowner will overlook the quality of a design in lieu of shopping for the best price. One way to gauge the quality of a design is how intricate it is and another is how much effort the designer puts in to create, prepare and present their concept. An expert design ensures quality and longevity. Ultimately, it will help save money by optimizing material use and finding construction efficiencies. A solid design will increase the return on the investment, while a poor design can become a liability and cost more in the long run.”

As is noted in the comment from the eLocal editor, “if the design isn’t solid, the results won’t be either.”

A deck addition is one of the highest returns on investment, according to the 2011 Cost vs. Value report. Including quality design turns a standard addition into a selling point with your home.
