How We Do It
For Hardwood Decks (Mahogany, Ipe, etc.)
- We apply the initial finish within 10-14 days of construction to minimize cupping and cracking, especially in summer.
- We highly recommend a second coat for hardwood decks.
- In colder months, this timeframe can be extended since cold weather helps preserve the wood.
For Softwood Decks (Redwood, Cedar, etc.)
- The deck needs 30-90 days to weather before finishing.
- If conditions aren’t ideal, we can extend the timeframe without compromising results.
The Finishing Process (Same for Hardwood & Softwood)
- Preparation: We sand floors, step treads, top caps, built-in benches, and other horizontal surfaces.
- Brightening: Using oxalic acid and water, we restore the wood’s natural tone—either by hand or pressure washer, depending on conditions.
- Protection: We carefully cover patios, windows, doors, and furniture before applying the finish.
- Staining: A high-quality stain is applied with a sprayer, pad, or rag. Excess is wiped away for a smooth, even finish—never sticky or tacky.
