At DeckTec, we care deeply about the environment, which is why we continue to be the leading crafter of natural wood outdoor projects. We know that you enjoy spending time on your deck or patio, but we also know that other creatures might, too!
It’s spring time, and besides a blossoming business season for deck construction and service, that can mean baby animals. Most common visitors are birds and squirrels, who after having spent a long, hard winter collecting nest materials, are just about to give birth to a batch of (soon to be) bushy tailed babies or feathery fledglings.
Wooden structures placed off a warm home, like decks or roofs, can seem to be the perfect lodgings for wild animals looking for a place to nest. While you’re getting your house ready for a change in the season, make sure it’s wildlife- proofed as well.
Scheduling your deck service in early spring will help you bypass several challenges, such as beating the spring time rush that comes with a specialty contractor in high demand, like DeckTec. However, it will also ensure avoidance of stress and harm that could come to newborn animals who may be in your backyard.
Here are a few tips to making sure you, your deck, and the critters in the area spring into the season safely:
- Don’t trim large or dead limbs in the spring or summer. This is best to do before so many animal species are nesting, including larger birds like owls.
- If squirrels are gnawing on your deck, try capsaicin-based repellents or lightly rubbing the exposed surfaces with a bar of soap. Use caution with capsaicin; it can be transferred to your hands and will cause intense irritation if you rub it into your eyes.
- Keep a close eye out around your house. If squirrels have been coming and going from your deck, attic, or roof, or seem interested in these areas, seal up any entry points and make repairs in EARLY SPRING.
- Seal any openings with a sturdy material before they appear and start building a nest. If you discover birds building before eggs are laid, remove the nest and appropriately cover the opening they were using.
- If a squirrel has already given birth to babies in your deck or roof structure, please contact your local humane wildlife to remove them safely. Sealing up or removing the babies without proper know-how will cause inhumane stress and likely will not solve the problem, as the mother squirrel may tear out any seals to get to her babies.
A properly maintained and wildlife savvy deck can also be a great place for bird-watchers or other wildlife lovers to observe them safely. Schedule your deck service today by contacting DeckTec for a humane and hassle-free spring time!

My husband Matt and I [...] have moved away from the home where we had the beautiful deck and outdoor living space you created. We will forever remember fondly that beautiful deck, and the hard work you did during a very bad economic time to fix problems around the foundation of our home. Steve, Keith, and all of your workers were fabulous and we sent several of our friends your way with referrals. We are sure that your deck helped us get a wonderful offer on our home.
We just wanted to tell you how much we enjoy the decks DeckTec constructed at our home. Their use is a constant joy. We continually receive compliments on the design and quality of your work. We look forward to many years of use.
DeckTec are absolute pros. They just finished a big deck and roof cover project at my house. The total experience from working with Steve in Design and Sales, Keith in Project Management, and Charlie, Josh, and Hank in Construction was nothing but 6 star service. 100% on time and on budget with craftsmanship and quality. Skip the “Hammer and Nails” contractors and go with DeckTec if you want an “Outdoor Living Space”. Call these people – you will not be disappointed.
I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with the work Decktec completed refinishing my deck. It hasn’t looked this good since it was new sixteen years ago. Decktec was very professional, polite and willing to work with me to get the exact color of stain I wanted. I would recommend Decktec to anyone who wants a complete job from the great construction work starting the job, to its thorough cleanup. I’m happy my neighbor referred me to Decktec. You are the fourth company I’ve had refinish my deck and will now be the only company I use going forward.
