The dishes are done, the kids are in bed, and now it’s time to slip into your comfy deck chair to relax and enjoy a beverage by the fire pit.

There’s just one problem.

That darn light!

Your neighbor’s flood light keeps going on every time the slightest movement occurs, blasting you with a beam of bright light. How unpleasant!
There are few things we love more in Colorado than sitting outdoors at night. This is particularly true in the summer when nighttime provides a bit of respite from the intense Colorado heat. The problem is that even away from the glow of city lights, light pollution affects how we experience outdoor living at night.

Light pollution affects many facets of life, not just our hard-earned deck time. In addition to disrupting our circadian rhythm, light at night disrupts animal migration patterns. For example, you may know that in coastal areas where sea turtles mate, cities have limited lighting to encourage nesting and discourage hatchlings from becoming disoriented. You may not know that certain types of beetles actually utilize the Milky Way to navigate.

Colorado is home to various animals, from nocturnal mammals to migrating birds and insects, that are adversely affected by lights at night. Moose, deer, and mountain lion suffer from extensive habitat loss, not simply from buildings but also from the light they emit. Birds can veer off their traditional migration due to artificial light, making their long journey even more perilous.

Dark Skies are Perfect for Deck Vibes

With the understanding that light is a real problem for humans and animals alike, many cities have worked to limit the amount of light pollution that washes out the incredible views of our galaxy. Some have even gone as far as to become designated as Dark Sky Cities. Dark Sky Sites are areas designated for their minimal light pollution, making them ideal for stargazing and preserving natural habitats. These communities prioritize the reduction of artificial light to protect nocturnal wildlife, promote energy efficiency, and allow humans to reconnect with the night sky’s serene beauty.

In Colorado, the towns of Crestone, Norwood, Nucla, Ridgway, and Westcliffe are all listed on DarkSkyColorado.org as receiving Dark Sky Certifications. The Centennial State also offers 10 Dark Parks with similar light-limited credentials.

Colorado Dark Sky Parks

  • Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
  • Curecanti National Recreation Area
  • Dinosaur National Monument
  • Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument
  • Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve
  • Hovenweep National Monument
  • Jackson Lake State Park
  • Mesa Verde National Park
  • Slumgullion Center
  • Top of the Pines

Here at DeckTec, we understand the importance of responsible outdoor lighting to maximize the best deck vibes. Deck light design is pivotal in creating an inviting outdoor space while minimizing light pollution.

If you’re interested in incorporating Dark Sky principles to enhance your own outdoor comfort, you’re making a wise choice. These principles not only reduce light pollution but also create a more inviting and relaxing outdoor space.

Dark Sky Deck Light Design

Light is critical on a dark deck, but using light wisely is key to truly unlocking the best time for deck living.

Use Shielded Fixtures: Direct light downward, minimizing glare and preventing light from dispersing upward into the sky.

Choose Warm LED Bulbs: Warm-colored LED bulbs (around 2700-3000 Kelvin) provide gentle illumination without contributing significantly to light pollution. Avoid cool/blue lights that disrupt natural rhythms and attract insects.

Utilize Timers or Motion Sensors: Reduce unnecessary light usage by installing timers or motion sensors that activate lights only when needed. This not only conserves energy but also enhances security.

Low-Level Lighting: Rather than floodlights or high-intensity beams, consider low-level lighting options such as deck step lights, pathway markers, or string lights to create ambiance without overpowering the night.

Consider Smart Lighting Systems: Smart lighting allows you to control brightness levels, schedules, and colors, offering versatility while maintaining eco-friendly practices.

As outdoor living enthusiasts, we have a responsibility to design and illuminate our spaces thoughtfully. By embracing Dark Sky principles and implementing mindful deck light designs, we not only enhance our outdoor experience but also contribute to a more sustainable and harmonious environment for all creatures, human and wild. The benefits are clear: more inviting outdoor space, reduced light pollution, and a healthier environment.

If you are thinking about creating a more inviting and light-friendly outdoor space, feel free to call us at 303-277-1550. We’d be happy to help you incorporate Dark Sky principles into your deck lighting design.

But we won’t talk to your neighbor about that flood light for you. Sorry.

My husband Matt and I [...] have moved away from the home where we had the beautiful deck and outdoor living space you created.  We will forever remember fondly that beautiful deck, and the hard work you did during a very bad economic time to fix problems around the foundation of our home.  Steve, Keith, and all of your workers were fabulous and we sent several of our friends your way with referrals.  We are sure that your deck helped us get a wonderful offer on our home.

Nancy & Matt, Lakewood

We just wanted to tell you how much we enjoy the decks DeckTec constructed at our home. Their use is a constant joy. We continually receive compliments on the design and quality of your work. We look forward to many years of use.

Eric & Gloria, Arvada

DeckTec are absolute pros. They just finished a big deck and roof cover project at my house. The total experience from working with Steve in Design and Sales, Keith in Project Management, and Charlie, Josh, and Hank in Construction was nothing but 6 star service. 100% on time and on budget with craftsmanship and quality. Skip the “Hammer and Nails” contractors and go with DeckTec if you want an “Outdoor Living Space”. Call these people – you will not be disappointed.

Dave & Sheila, Centennial

I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with the work Decktec completed refinishing my deck. It hasn’t looked this good since it was new sixteen years ago. Decktec was very professional, polite and willing to work with me to get the exact color of stain I wanted. I would recommend Decktec to anyone who wants a complete job from the great construction work starting the job, to its thorough cleanup. I’m happy my neighbor referred me to Decktec. You are the fourth company I’ve had refinish my deck and will now be the only company I use going forward.
