It’s that time of year again! Time to break out the cleaning supplies and trash bags.
Our favorite yearly spring ritual is upon us. You hate to think of the time it’s going to take you… You wonder if wasting a whole Saturday or even the whole weekend is even worth it. We tend to want everything done instantly, that’s just the fast-paced world we are living in today.
We’ve got some spring cleaning tips and advice from the pros that will help you get it done in record time. Professional home cleaners come prepared and they’re not going to waste any time. If you can afford it, just hire them! Of course, some aspects of spring cleaning, like sorting through old things, is best left to handle personally.
How To Do Spring Cleaning The Right Way
Motivation is key to getting things done and getting them done fast. Motivate yourself and the family with a special outing when the project is complete. The pros don’t take TV or email breaks and you shouldn’t either. The ultimate goal for professionals is to get in and get out, for you it’s get done and move on!
Listen to some music that really gets you moving. You could even load an audio book onto your iPod and listen to that while you clean. That’s multitasking at its best!
Don’t forget that dirt and dust follow the laws of gravity. It falls just like everything else. So, start at the top and work your way down.
Spring Cleaning Safety Tips
Make sure you dress for the job. You want to be comfortable but functional. The clothes you wear should be loose but not so loose as to catch on corners, doorknobs, or anything that could spill.
If you’re going to be on your knees a lot, look at investing in some knee pads or something similar. The professionals use them, and for good reason. You’ll lose steam and motivation quickly if you start feeling uncomfortable.
Don’t forget the gloves! These can keep the germs and chemicals off your skin. The regular yellow cleaning gloves you see at any grocery store will work fine.
Have a Plan!
Probably the most important thing you’re going to want to do, before you even break out the mop, is have a plan! This alone can cut a major amount of time off your spring cleaning project. Instead of guessing what to do next, you’ll have your plan of action right in front of you.
Top of the list: pick up the clutter.
You don’t want to slide your junk from side to side or just clean under and around it. Doing this first will make your whole job easier.
Whether you start with the basement or garage, begin in one corner and work your way around the room.
Let go of the items you honestly will never use again by asking yourself those tough questions: “When did I last use this?” “When do I think I will use it again?” “Do I still like this?”
If you catch yourself answering maybe to most of these questions, you might want to organize with a friend, family member, or professional organizer who will keep you focused and help you decide yes or no. Once your remove everything that does not belong (donate, trash, goes elsewhere), you may have all the storage space you need.
If not, take measurements of your space and the items you want to store, and go shopping (maybe even in other rooms of your house). If it is difficult to figure out which organizing product works best in your situation, ask the person at the store, do some research on the web, consult a professional organizer, or use another knowledgeable resource.
Once you sort and purge what does not belong, you will probably be amazed at how much space you have. If you need some tips on how to best organize what remains, flip through a magazine, sketch a diagram of the space, enlist a professional organizer, etc. No matter what you decide to organize, ask for help, make it fun, reward yourself, and maintain the organization.

My husband Matt and I [...] have moved away from the home where we had the beautiful deck and outdoor living space you created. We will forever remember fondly that beautiful deck, and the hard work you did during a very bad economic time to fix problems around the foundation of our home. Steve, Keith, and all of your workers were fabulous and we sent several of our friends your way with referrals. We are sure that your deck helped us get a wonderful offer on our home.
We just wanted to tell you how much we enjoy the decks DeckTec constructed at our home. Their use is a constant joy. We continually receive compliments on the design and quality of your work. We look forward to many years of use.
DeckTec are absolute pros. They just finished a big deck and roof cover project at my house. The total experience from working with Steve in Design and Sales, Keith in Project Management, and Charlie, Josh, and Hank in Construction was nothing but 6 star service. 100% on time and on budget with craftsmanship and quality. Skip the “Hammer and Nails” contractors and go with DeckTec if you want an “Outdoor Living Space”. Call these people – you will not be disappointed.
I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with the work Decktec completed refinishing my deck. It hasn’t looked this good since it was new sixteen years ago. Decktec was very professional, polite and willing to work with me to get the exact color of stain I wanted. I would recommend Decktec to anyone who wants a complete job from the great construction work starting the job, to its thorough cleanup. I’m happy my neighbor referred me to Decktec. You are the fourth company I’ve had refinish my deck and will now be the only company I use going forward.
