Joy of the Pigskin

Along with crisp autumn air, turning leaf colors, and kids heading back to school, the season reminds us of that great American sport, football.  The game, started in the United States in the mid 1800s as a variation of rugby and soccer, has grown to become a popular sport worldwide.  While we in the States call it "football" our friends around the world may refer to it as "Gridiron" to keep the sport separate from soccer. Do you want in on the game? Dash outside this fall with the ol' pigskin and enjoy some of the following trivia: The name "pigskin" comes from the inflatable inside of the football.  At one time this inside was truly a gift from pigs, but not their actual skins.  The innards used to inflate footballs were made from pig bladders, which were durable and flexible in a time before rubber became widely used. In 1887 a man named Walter Camp of Yale University is said to have led the way to football, as we know it today.  Mr. Camp first[...]

Create an Outdoor Room

You’ve built the perfect deck and equipped it to suit your needs. Perhaps it has comfortable furniture or a fire pit. It’s a great space, but it doesn’t truly become a room until it has a roof over it. Your outdoor space should be a reflection of your lifestyle. Whether it’s creating an outdoor kitchen space, where you can whip up a fantastic dinner under the stars, or building a cozy living room to entertain guests, a roof helps create a space that will be used and enjoyed for years to come. A roof creates the boundaries of your outdoor living space, just like the walls and ceiling do inside your home. A large deck is just a big area without the definition of space a roof cover provides. Call 303-277-1550 or visit DeckTec.com/SummerRoof and setup your consultation today. Remember, at DeckTec we’ve got you covered.

Say “Hello” to our new tool!

We're excited to announce a new tool in our communications tool-belt at DeckTec. The 2013 spring season has been filled with wet weather and an outstanding response to our Early Bird service offer. We are always looking for ways to improve our customer service, and hope this simple solution will improve communication during your service. Our expert finishing crews are now leaving a sticky note on either your front or patio door after they complete one of the stages of service. We're hoping to keep you better informed about the status of your project, always with the best result in mind. Our new service manager Jill said, "Seeing these come in was like Christmas! I look forward to keeping our customers up-to-date and continuing the fantastic year we've been having."

Applying Stain in the Rain

Leads to many pains of the brain. As we break into the month of June, you and I both know that we can expect to see afternoon showers. Now, it's not the same as monsoon season, starting in July, but it still poses difficulties for our service department when trying to apply coats of stain. The stains we use are all oil based, and as our high school studies have taught us: oil and water do not mix. Due to these two elements not mixing, we cannot stain the deck it it's still wet; however, the reverse works in our favor. Thanks to our process, if the stain is applied prior to the rain falling it will stay on the deck, repel the water, and not wash away. To compensate for the rain, our crews will be working in the afternoon to prepare decks for their new coat in the morning. Our schedule is always filling, so if you haven't scheduled your annual maintenance, do so today!

Is your deck as safe as you think?

May is Deck Safety Month and an important time to think about your deck and how it affects the safety of your family and friends. The latest rounds of freeze and thaw, coupled with the predicted May showers are apt to contribute to structural issues in aging decks. Any deck 15 years or older is subject to age and weathering problems, some not showing obvious signs of decay until an accident happens. Don’t become a victim of this notoriously unseen problem, have your deck inspected! [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wC4_L-cUgo0]   Warning signs: As Denver’s recognized deck specialist since 1990, we recommend checking for these warning signs: Are joists, beams, or other structural pieces rotted or split? Are there loose screws or nails “popping” out? Does your deck have loose, warped or broken boards? Do your stairs shake when you use them? Are your rails and/or handrails firmly held in place? There should be little or no give when you push on them. Do you have white mildew on your boards? Is the overall condition of your deck affecting its[...]

It’s time to Fall Back!

As the temperature drops and the days get shorter, you're probably thinking of putting the patio furniture away, raking the leaves, and preparing for a snug winter indoors. We'd like to remind you that Daylight Saving time ends this Sunday at 2 am. Turn your clocks back one hour when you head to bed Saturday night and enjoy that extra hour of snooze time. Now is also the time to change the batteries in your smoke detector to keep your family safe in the event of a fire. Servicing your deck to clean and protect the wood against winter weather is the most important treatment you can do to extend the life of your deck. Heavy rains and brutal sun are especially rough on decks in the summer. However, it is winter weather that is the biggest threat to the life of your deck. Winter moisture sitting on the deck penetrates older raw wood and freezes causing small and normal cracks to expand. It's not too late to schedule this important maintenance. If you haven't done[...]

Want to save money on your electric bill?

For some homeowners, a nice deck is all that’s needed to enjoy outdoor living at its finest. This summer, however, has proven to us that this type of homeowner is becoming less prevalent. Brutal sun and heat, combined with sporadic rain storms, are driving people indoors, and air conditioning bills skyward. Everyone is searching for a solution to these issues and we here at DeckTec know that the solution is a roof cover. How can a roof addition lower monthly heating bills? Popular Deck with Roof Cover To understand the answer, we must first break the problem down into some of the more common parts. First, let’s look at how sunlight affects the home itself. When sunlight falls on the side of a home, its radiant energy heats the wall and warms the interior space. This effect is increased if there are any windows are present on these sides as the sunlight can now enter the rooms, bypassing any insulation. This is why blinds and curtains are so effective at cooling off a room;[...]
